Click Bait Attacks

 

Cyber Attacks are of various types like Malware, Sextortion, Phishing, Password breaches etc. Click Bait Attacks are one of such attacks which can lead to cyber threats.


Meaning of Click Bait Attacks

In Click Bait Attack, the user is lead or lured to click a link with exciting offers or promotions or impossibly possible advantages. So, when the users switched to different pages from what they are using currently, these pages ask users to input their personal data’s so that they can install viruses in users’ devices just by clicking them that can be highly damaging and malicious.

With these attacks, the attackers or criminals can get access to users’ personal data that was kept safe in the device.  Few examples of Click Bait Attacks or how they lure the user are:

  1. How to Win 1 crore Rs in just 5 mins.

  2. Click and win Latest iPhone.

  3. Forward this message to 20 groups and win something etc.

These are some messages through which the majority of the people are attracted to click on them and thus falling prey to cyber-attack.  They provide the user with false hopes and promises.

Nowadays, Social Media platforms provide huge money to the content creator for their views, likes and subscribers. Thus, to gain easy money this type of Click Bait site are generated to get maximum views by clicking and opening their relevant page. Generating such types of advertisements are also Click Baits. 


How to Identify the Click Baits?

The Click Baits are generally easily identified through their typical patterns, use of words, languages, presentation or headlines.

According to one of the publications from “ResearchGate” they have classified the Click Bait headline into different categories: Sentence Structure, Word Patterns, Clickbait Language, N-gram Feature, Blocking based on topical similarities. 

E.g., “Which Disney Song Is You Based on Your Zodiac Sign”

          “Upload your profile picture to see Which Bollywood Actor you resemble”

           “What will you be reborn in Next Life”


How To Block or Prevent Click Baits?

As we have discussed above, it is very easy to identify Click Baits. Many baiting links or sites mainly rely on the psychological factors of humans to target their victims. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to use different techniques to prevent such attacks.

Education and Training Social Awareness


Precaution is always better than cure. In this Internet Era, an alert is a key to be prevented from such cyber-attacks. You need to be upskilled and be aware of the new and various cyber-attacks. General Awareness and Security awareness is very important. The use of different Security tools can also be useful. Provide proper training to yourself your employees, students, family members and friends.

Also, it is very important to include such defined and structured courses in our syllabus and in our education system, so that the general public is made aware of them.

Make sure your antivirus and antimalware security settings are up-to-date and they flag potentially harmful and malicious cyber threats. Scan your devices regularly for any virus to avoid any cyber threats.

Lock or secure your browsers to make sure your connections are secure and valid.

For example, in Google Chrome, there is a lock sign in the browser search window which indicates that it is secure.

Awareness can help not only you but your near dear ones, your organisations, your surrounding from such cyber threats. 

Keep learning about such attacks and be updated. Stay away from Click Baiting.
