How Cyber Hygiene is equivalent to Personal Hygiene?

 

Personal hygiene is necessary for the human body same so cyber hygiene. It is a cyber security practice to keep your software and hardware safe and protected from any kind of cyber-attack. Cyber hygiene is also an essential part to safeguard our systems from any kind of breach or malware attacks. The main objective behind cyber hygiene is to organize and prevent the system’s sensitive data from any kind of attack or theft.


Why is Cyber Hygiene Important?

Firstly, it is our duty to maintain our system and keep it in good working condition by protecting it from external viruses and secondly, like our health is in our hands, similarly, we can secure our computers and it is possible for us to prevent cybercrime causing by security breaches. Installing malware, or recovering personal data by creating a habit centred around cyber hygiene & considered as best practice.

Nowadays, many big companies have hired cyber security professionals to prevent their system’s data from breach, but a common mistake made from the employee side is that they generally ignore cyber hygiene which is a thing that needs to be maintained at an individual level, if every individual will learn basics of cyber hygiene, then the organization will be a better place in keeping its data and systems safe and secure.

 

Common Cyber Hygiene Problems and Challenges

  • Loss of data- The hardware or online cloud storage, which is not maintained and updated, gets prone to hacking easily, which results in the loss of information.
  • Misplaced Data- Lack of Cyber Hygiene, also, cause misplacement of data.
  • Security Breach- There is some common constant threats in today’s era on the organization’s data like malware, spam, ransomware and phishing.
  • Out of Data Software- Since it is more vulnerable to cyber attacks, so it is highly advisable to keep your software applications updated timely, to have access to the new security and current changes of that version to stay protected from any kind of malware attacks.
  • Older Security Software- To preserve your data from breach, it is necessary to keep your antivirus software updated, as the updated versions are capable of preventing the system from updating versions of attacks.

 

How to keep good Cyber Hygiene?

  • Creating Cyber Hygiene Policy- It would be easier to prevent the data for the company by creating a cyber hygiene policy for all the employees.
  • Check on the applications used and not used- It is always advised to make a list and keep a check on the hardware, software and other applications to keep it updated, when needed and uninstall, if not needed.
  • Ensure secure authentication and access- When employees work from various locations, they access from different devices, which may not be authenticated, so to secure access, the employees should prevent themselves from using external access from others.
