Privacy policies are meant to be disclosed by the sites or apps to make their users aware of how they are going to use the information they receive. We all use social media platforms to feel connected with the world. Recent data breaches have questioned the privacy policies of apps/sites. Instagram is one of the significant social media intermediaries which have more than 21 crore users in India and they are increasing day by day.
So, the
question is what the privacy policy of Instagram states?
What data does Instagram collect?
The automated
system of Instagram collects all the information:
- What we see through their features i.e. Camera- Instagram uses that for suggesting the filters etc., Location of photo, dates. Though the political and religious views could be subject to the legislature of specific countries.
- The network and
connection you use, and if you permitted to sync the contact Instagram can
access your address book or call log or SMS log history and according to them,
they can use it for suggesting or finding new people.
- Kinds of
content you view or involve with; the actions you take; the people or accounts
we intermingle with; the features you use and the time, regularity and duration
of our activities.
- In case of
using their app for buying or other financial transactions- your
debit or credit card number and supplementary cards info; additional account
and authentication data etc.
- The information
others provide may contain your information provided by them i.e. when they tag
you, sync your contact information, send a message to you.
- It gathers all the
cookies, device signals data you let Instagram receive through device settings you turn on, e.g., Access to one’s camera or photos, location.
- The partners of Instagram can provide the information related to your offline actions comprising data about websites you stop over, device, purchases you make, the ads one watch etc. Even if you don’t have an Instagram account.
- The connections, interests, first choice given by
the user is used for the personalized experience and making it more
relatable.
- To help business,
advertisers and other partner products.
- To promote safety,
security by verifying the accounts, keeping a check on suspicious
activity.
- To communicate and research for the social good.
- Users have the option of choosing the audience with whom they want to share the content. Also, other accounts can see who has viewed their story. You can set your privacy in settings i.e. block,
restrict, reply, comments, two-factor authentication etc.
- But when it comes to
Public accounts/information everyone can share, download, see, use that
information even the non-user also.
- There is an option the
report the content if you have any objection related to the content shared
about you.
- Information about what
one share can be received by the third-party apps.
- On the demand from
agencies of law enforcement.
- To research partners
and academics.
- Instagram also shares this information globally both internally with facebook companies and externally with their partners and other products to which we gave access.
- User can delete the information or account but this is a step-by-step procedure. When we search for something on Instagram,
we can delete the search history but a log of that will be deleted after 6
months.
- For temporary deletion
of account deactivate option is provided.
- For verification of
the government id provided by the user, they delete that copy within 30
days subject to reasons.
Conclusion
Having the personal information of numerous
people is an asset in today’s world and also a huge responsibility. Though the
choices are ours, still they are not ours. Despite all this security still,
there are lacunas. Privacy is a very important aspect that needs to be
protected by them and us together.
